Kyasanur Forest Disease (KFD)
A tick-borne viral haemorrhagic disease found primarily in southern India, first reported in 1957 in Shimoga, Karnataka.
The Pathogen
Caused by the KFD Virus (Flaviviridae family). Known as "Monkey Fever" because monkey deaths often precede human outbreaks.
Transmission
Transmitted by hard ticks (Hemaphysalis spinigera). It does not spread person-to-person.
Clinical Profile
- Case Fatality: Ranges from 5% to 10%.
- Symptoms: Sudden fever, vomiting, and internal bleeding.
- Treatment: No specific cure; supportive care and vaccines used.
Vishwamitri: India's Crocodile River
Passes through Vadodara, Gujarat. Famous for harboring a massive population of mugger crocodiles within an urban stretch.
Course Details
Originates from the slopes of Pavagadh hills. Passes through Gujarat's 3rd largest city and drains into the Gulf of Khambhat.
