Ethylene Glycol (EG) Contamination
The Tamil Nadu government issued a public warning after laboratory tests detected ethylene glycol contamination in Almond Kit syrup.
Chemical Properties
- Colorless, odorless, and slightly viscous.
- Mildly sweet taste (often leads to accidental ingestion).
- Miscible with water and alcohol.
- Does not evaporate quickly.
Toxic Impact
When ingested, the body metabolizes EG into oxalic acid and other toxic compounds. This leads to:
- Nausea
- Kidney Failure
- Seizures
- Fatalities
Major Industrial Uses
EG is primarily used as antifreeze and de-icing fluid for aircraft. In manufacturing, it is a key ingredient for polyesters, synthetic resins, and industrial inks.
